Group General Manager – New Zealand

Jonathan leads Investment New Zealand in his role as Group General Manager.

Background and Expertise

Jonathan was born and educated in New Zealand and graduated with a BA (History)/ LLB in 1985 from Victoria University of Wellington. He has vast experience in operational, change and strategic management in highly competitive industries and in government. As both a manager and an advisor, Jonathan has led the restructuring of electricity and gas companies following mergers and acquisitions (including the creation of New Zealand’s largest listed electricity and gas retailer); the design and creation of Industry New Zealand (the New Zealand economic development agency created in 2000); and the merger of Industry New Zealand and Trade New Zealand in 2003. Jonathan has been a member of the senior management team at New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, New Zealand’s economic development agency, since its creation in 2003, and has led the development of the agency’s overall strategic direction.

In 2004-2006, a secondment to the OECD took Jonathan to the United Kingdom, Sweden and the Netherlands, where he led teams providing analysis and advice on regional economic development policies and governance. Most recently, Jonathan contributed to the development of a long term economic strategy by a Middle Eastern economic development agency.
