Indian Company Takes New Zealand IT Innovation to the World

12 March 2007

Leading information and communications technology (ICT) solutions company CMC Limited is partnering with a New Zealand university to take New Zealand’s innovative ICT technologies and capabilities to the world.

CMC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Massey University’s e-Centre in Auckland, New Zealand and the two are jointly establishing a technology centre that will give New Zealand companies a direct pipeline into CMC’s international distribution and sales channels.

Headquartered in Mumbai, India and with annual revenue of approximately US$300 million, CMC employs 3500 people and provides a wide spectrum of information technology (IT) solutions and services to government and private sector organisations. CMC is a subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services Limited, one of the world’s leading ICT consulting service and business process outsourcing organisations, and part of a multibillion-dollar Indian business conglomerate, the Tata Group.

Known as the CMC Technology Export Centre (CMCTEC), the New Zealand-based venture ensures products are suited to market needs before they are passed to CMC, with the first offering – performance-based software developed by Auckland company QLBS – already sent to CMC.

The CEO and Managing Director of CMC, Ramanathan Ramanan, met with New Zealand IT companies while visiting New Zealand as part of Investment New Zealand’s (INZ) Visiting Investor Programme. INZ’s parent organisation, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, has also been working with CMC and the Massey e-Centre to facilitate the MoU.

George Mathew, INZ Business Development Consultant, says the initiative will accelerate market penetration for New Zealand companies by acting as a channel to the world for New Zealand innovation.

“CMC will not only play the part of a software developer and integrator for add-on product solutions that New Zealand companies offer, it is also in a position to support in-market distributorship in India and other global markets. Other opportunities are also being explored by CMC and New Zealand technology companies,” says Mathew.

India is increasingly recognised worldwide for ICT and other technologies, such as automotive components, telecommunications and wireless technology and investment in high-tech infrastructure there is growing at more than 20 percent a year.

“This relationship with CMC confirms the competitive products and solutions being developed in New Zealand and opens doors to put them in front of leading companies in the ICT sector that work with CMC, such as Microsoft, IBM, Hewlett Packard and Sun,” says Mathew.

There is interest from a range of companies of varying scale, keen to work closely with CMC in the Indian market, says Mathew.
