A canny investment in New Zealand excellence

26 July 2005

Recent commentary in the New Zealand Herald has highlighted the success of Investment New Zealand's support for global software engineering company EDS in New Zealand.  In 2002, Investment New Zealand facilitated a $1.5m grant to EDS to enable the company to bring outsourced work to New Zealand through its worldwide "Best Shore" programme.

The investment was a vital demonstration of government support for the scheme, which has generated nearly a quarter of the company's $84m of new revenue and will result in an extra 360 software engineers and SAP experts being recruited by March 2006.  EDS's total investment in its New Zealand operation since 2002 has been over $150m.

The Best Shore programme provides tangible evidence of New Zealand's continuing global competitiveness as a software engineering location. New Zealand provides a good mid-range cost solution with the added advantages of a safe geopolitical environment and higher productivity from low-turnover, native English-speaking staff.

Following the success of the EDS investment, the Government has awarded $1.26m to Outsource to New Zealand or 'O2NZ' - a joint venture of five New Zealand IT companies.  The funding will help the venture promote New Zealand generally as an IT outsourcing destination.
